Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson, Blueprint Labs Affiliates, Receive 2024 Nobel Prize

“The pathbreaking scholarship for which Acemoglu and Johnson were awarded the Nobel Prize, along with coauthor James Robinson, proves that institutional structures built centuries ago continue to shape our modern world. Their work implies that the decisions we make today, at the dawn of the AI era, will matter enormously for our collective futures.” – David Autor, Co-Director, Blueprint Labs

MIT Blueprint Labs is thrilled to congratulate Affiliates Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson on the 2024 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences!

Daron and Simon received the award alongside James Robinson of the University of Chicago “for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity.”

Throughout their careers, Daron and Simon have conducted groundbreaking work on the intersection of political institutions and economic development. They have collaborated on several papers, including a seminal paper that analyzed the long-term impacts of colonialism and another that explored the relationship between health and economic development. More recently, they have contributed to academic and policy discourse by examining how technology and innovation impact economic inequality. Last year, Daron and Simon released a book, Power and Progress: Our 1,000-Year Struggle over Technology and Prosperity, which examines how artificial intelligence and other technologies affect progress and economic inequality.

Daron has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and six books, including, with Robinson, the New York Times bestseller Why Nations Fail: Power, Prosperity, and Poverty. Simon served as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund in 2007 and 2008 and has published four books, including the widely-acclaimed 13 Bankers: the Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial Meltdown.
