Biography

Nikhil Agarwal is the Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Agarwal studies the design of economic decision-environments and markets, combining insights from economic theory, statistics, and real-world practice. A growing strand of his work examines how humans and AI systems can collaborate effectively in high-stakes decisions. He has applied his work to education and healthcare, with contributions to organ donation, residency matching, and school choice. His research has appeared in journals such as Econometrica and the American Economic Review and is funded by the NIH and NSF. He co-directs MIT Blueprint Labs and an NIH-funded NBER network on the use of AI in healthcare. He is a recipient of the Sloan Research Fellowship and the Infosys Prize.
