The 2025 US university endowment tax hike, together with other financial pressures, is pushing the wealthiest universities to shrink their doctoral cohorts. This column exploits a novel sample of MIT Economics PhD applicants to shed light on the research value-added of elite doctoral programs and the possible consequences of program cutbacks.
