50 years after Garrity: School integration and performance in Boston Public Schools

MIT Morris and Sophie Chang Bldg E52, 50 Memorial Drive, 7th Floor, Salon M, Cambridge, MA 02142
November 7, 2024
4:00 – 7:30 pm

Overview

This year marks a significant anniversary in Boston’s efforts to improve the education of historically disadvantaged students: the 50th anniversary of Boston’s court-ordered busing decision. In 1974, US District Judge W. Arthur Garrity, Jr. mandated busing for 18,000 students to begin to address Boston’s separate and unequal school system. This anniversary poses a pivotal opportunity to 1) reexamine educational equity in Boston while reflecting on the lasting effects of historical desegregation decisions and 2) consider how to improve student outcomes going forward.

This invite-only panel discussion will bring together community members, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to reflect on the legacy of this decision and the challenges that remain. The event will kick off with a discussion among education leaders, policymakers, and activists including:

  • Milly Arbaje-Thomas, President & CEO of METCO
  • Rebecca Grainger, Senior Advisor for Youth and Schools, City of Boston
  • Ted Landsmark, Civil rights leader and Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University
  • Jean McGuire, former CEO of METCO and civil rights leader
  • Melissa Nobles, Chancellor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Their conversation will be followed by a facilitated panel discussion among prominent researchers including:

  • Joshua Angrist, Ford Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Peter Blair, Associate Professor at Harvard University
  • Carycruz Bueno, Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University
  • Kevin Lang, Professor at Boston University
  • Tomás Monarrez, Senior Research Fellow at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia
  • Sean Reardon, Professor at Stanford University
  • Elizabeth Setren, Assistant Professor at Tufts University
